Of the rest, Sau is being treated at the Midnapore hospital’s HDU, while the more-critical other three are at SSKM Hospital. The same team had delivered all their babies at the same unit in the Midnapore hospital.
Doctors said Sau’s baby boy, who had been on ventilation from the first day, needed intensive care treatment at NICU. The family was told on Wednesday there was a slight improvement in the infant’s condition. “We were hoping to hold our firstborn once he emerged from NICU. We are heartbroken. My wife is improving. We have not broken the news to her yet. She won’t be able to bear the shock,” said Santosh Sau, the father.
The family has demanded a CBI investigation instead of a CID probe. A CID team visited the nursing home in Debra, West Midnapore, on Thursday where a senior doctor from MMCH conducted a surgery on Jan 8. The CID found that this doctor was supposed to be on duty at MMCH but was instead 40km away at the Debra. nursing home.
Based on a preliminary report by a 13-member doctor panel, the government indicated negligence and protocol breach by the unit dealing with the five women. Factors, such as drug interface, are also being probed.
The three women at SSKM are still critical and a multidisciplinary medical board is overseeing their treatment.
