Kolkata: Modern High School for Girls curated a day-long event that catered to the different aspects of penmanship and the history of using pens to write letters and beyond. The event, Panorama, was organized by the school’s history department, Legacy club, and Quiztion club. The activities reinforced the importance of handwritten expression in this digital age.
Deepak Jalan, CEO of a leading pen company, talked about the past and present of writing instruments, from ancient reed and quill pens to the invention of the fountain pen. He also provided a comparison between the different kinds of modern pens available in the market.
The event reflected Modern High School’s belief in the “integration of old and new”, as phrased by Devi Kar, the director of the school. He emphasized the importance of sustainability in pen-manufacturing, urging the students to opt for refillable pens over disposable ones.
A short skit was put up by the students. They used paper props and dressed up like various pens. Through effective contextual use of sarcasm and comedy, they were successful in executing a parody of the imagined behavior of different kinds of pens. Legacy club also put up a presentation featuring the journey of the pen through time.
The school’s quiz club then hosted a rapid-fire round of questions. The event concluded with a calligraphy and pen design workshop and display.
