Kolkata: Lalbazar cyber cell, along with the divisional cyber cells, has received at least 13 complaints of Chinese loan traps this month. In such cases, the fraudsters threaten and harass the acquaintances or relatives of the victim on call, asking them to clear the loan that the victim had taken via loan apps.
“These are mostly Chinese loan traps. Now, instead of calling the victim directly and threatening him, the fraudsters harass the victim’s close contacts and even people in their random call logs. They put pressure on the contacts to convince the original victim to pay up. after holding him as a major loan defaulter,” explained a cop.
Several complainants have received calls from 8 to 10 numbers. “The call recipients are subjected to extremely abusive language,” the officer added. According to investigators, when the actual victim downloads the loan app, it asks for several permissions at one go for installation purposes. This helps the fraudsters to access the call lists and contacts.
