Cops shot, undertrial escapes from prison van

Malda: Two police personnel were shot as the prisoner they were escorting fled from the van in North Dinajpur on Wednesday. The prisoner, a accused of murderwas being taken to jail from an Islampur court when the attack took place on National Highway 31 near Panjipara outpost of Goalpokhor PS.
Sources said the prison van was stopped when the undertrial, Sajjad Alam, wanted to go to the toilet near Panjipara Ekorchana Kali Mandir. As the prisoner got down around 4.30pm at the crowded spot where a popular sweet shop was located, locals could hear several rounds of firing. As locals rushed to the van, they found the two injured cops and saw the undertrial fleeing on a motorcycle. The wounded policemen — ASI Deben Baishya and constable Nilkanta Sarkar — were taken to Islampur Subdivision Hospital, and then shifted to North Bengal Medical College Hospital.
Islampur SP Joby Thomas said: “An undertrial prisoner fled and two policemen were wounded. We are investigating.” A manhunt has been launched for the escaped undertrial.
Alam, accused in a murder case in Karandighi PS, was lodged at Raiganj Correctional Home. Whether he snatched arms from a cop or was supplied one from elsewhere is not clear yet. Trinamool district president Kanailal Agarwal rushed to the hospital to see the injured policemen. State minister and Goalpokhor MLA Md Ghulam Rabbani said: “It is a horrible incident. Police must arrest the culprit soon.”
