Kolkata: An organization of a section of senior doctors has written to chief minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to rename Dorina crossing as’Abhaya Crossing‘, as the SN Banerjee Road-J N Road intersection in Esplanade became synonymous with protests against the rape and murder of a 31-year-old PGT doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Aug.
A search for ‘Abhaya Crossing’ on Google Maps is already leading users to the Esplanade crossing.
In its letter to the CM, the West Bengal Doctors’ Front said that Abhaya now symbolized a fight for justice, safety and dignity and so, Dorina crossing should be renamed ‘Abhaya Crossing’ in honor of the deceased RG Kar doctor.
But Mayor Firhad Hakim said, “They should approach the CBI with their demand. I think the CGO complex in Salt Lake should be renamed ‘Abhaya Complex’,” he said. Hakim had earlier come down heavily on the CBI for the delay in delivering justice to Abhaya’s family. “While our state administration promptly and remarkably wrapped up the investigation and did justice to the families of two rape victims, the CBI failed in its investigative process. They should feel ashamed,” he had said.
A KMC official said the change of name of a street or place has to follow a process. “An application has to be made to the civic authorities. We then send the proposal to the KMC road renaming committee, which takes a decision based on inspection and rules,” said the official.
