Kolkata: Eighteen constables, including two women, were injured when an empty school bus rammed into a Kolkata Police van at the Agarpara-Tentultala intersection near a private English medium school on BT Road on Tuesday afternoon.
The injured officers were admitted to Sagar Dutta Hospital at Kamarhati. Since there were no students in the school bus, a major mishap was averted. However, the bus driver was injured.
According to the police, the police van was heading to the city from Barrackpore BSF camp with 42 constables when the accident occurred. An officer said that the police van stopped at a traffic signal on the Kolkata-bound flank of the road when the school bus hit it from behind.
Both vehicles involved in the accident were heavily damaged. The accident caused severe traffic congestion in the area during peak hours of the day. Later, Khardah police reached the spot, removed the damaged vehicles with the help of a crane, and cleared the traffic jam in the area.
Prima facie, officers suspect that the school bus driver lost control and met with the accident. The exact reason for the accident was being investigated.
