Kolkata: Skip the crowded venues, overpriced menus, and parking nightmares to enjoy music, drinks, and laughter in the neighbourhood. That’s the mantra for a number of gated communities in the city as they gear up to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve this year.
From food pavilions to gaming zones, entertainment shows to musical nights, office bearers of Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) across gated enclaves in Kolkata and New Town said they meticulously planned an array of events catering to the interests of the residents.
At South City residential complex, the celebrations began on Christmas Eve as they organized a musical evening by the complex poolside while prepping the residents for a grander celebration due on Wednesday. Posters and banners were also set up across the complex, urging residents to celebrate the festivity within the safety of the complex.
“We are hosting a Christmas carnival with musical performances, magic shows, carols, food stalls, and a DJ night. On Wednesday, we will also host the finals of the intra-residents’ cricket tournament. There will be more musical performances and drinks. at exclusive prices and a complimentary dinner on 31st night,” said Manoj Gupta, a complex resident.
At Siddha Pines in Rajarhat, games and food stalls are being set up, and there will be musical performances on Christmas evening as the RWAs illuminate the entire complex premises with festive lights. “There will be game shows for kids. People dressed as Santa Claus will distribute gifts and goodies to children. We are scaling up the festivities with the intent that people enjoy the festivity within the complex without getting stressed at crowded party venues,” said Manav. Mehra, RWA President.
At Greenwood Elements in New Town, the area dedicated to festive occasions is being decked up as the Nativity Scene, representing the birth of Jesus. “The complex is being decorated with tinsel, wreaths, dazzling lights, streamers, and stars. We are also organizing musical performances and are setting up separate stalls where kids and adults can enjoy the festivity,” said Dhrubajyoti Basak, a complex resident.
Residents of Purti Veda complex in New Town said this is the first time they are organizing a Christmas carnival. “The Club House and community hall have been transformed into a winter wonderland. Residents have been invited to don their finest red attire, setting the tone for a merry and bright celebration over high tea. A special visit from a Santa Claus will delight children with playful antics,” said Sourav Sinha, the RWA president.
Sudip Roy Chowdhury, secretary at Daffodil Greens in Tollygunge, said they scaled down the celebrations due to the untimely death of a senior RWA member earlier this month. They are limiting the celebrations to a community dinner on Christmas night.
