Kolkata: One of the main accused in the murder attempt on Trinamool councilor Sushanta Ghosh was nabbed at Kolkata airport when he returned from Abu Dhabi. Ever since the attempt in Nov, the accused, Md Adil Hussein (44), was on the run.
According to police, it was Adil, originally from Bihar, who was contacted by main conspirator Azrof Khan, alias Gulzar, and asked to arrange the sharpshooters for the job, all the way from Bihar. Ever since Gulzar and two of the sharpshooters were arrested, Adil’s name was on the police radar. The total number of arrests in this case has now risen to seven.
“On Sunday morning, Adil, a resident of Lohia in the Jamui area of ​​Bihar who is currently residing at Topsia Road, was intercepted during immigration check at Kolkata Airport after he landed from Abu Dhabi since a lookout circular was issued against him. He was handed over to airport police by the immigration and eventually arrested by the anti rowdy section of DD as he is a wanted accused in this case,” said joint CP (crime & traffic) Rupesh Kumar.
The accused was produced in court on Sunday, where the police sought his remand till Jan 26. The court allowed police custody till Jan 25, said sources.
The cops probing the murder attempt on councillor Ghosh claimed in the first week of Dec that they identified the mysterious man, Adil (who went by the name of Imran amongst the sharpshooters), with all the sharpshooters stating that it was him who was in charge. of executing the murder. A gangster from Bihar, Adil was lodged in Bihar’s Beur jail for a long time, where he formed his gang of sharpshooters. Adil was named repeatedly by Gulzar during his questioning by the police. While initially, cops learned he fled to Dubai, they later confirmed that he was hiding in Abu Dhabi. Cops did not specify on Sunday why Adil decided to return to Kolkata.
Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma recently issued a directive stating that security arrangements for public representatives must be reassessed. Sources said all OCs and DCs have received a 17-page directive from the commissioner regarding law and order and traffic on Friday.
