Kolkata: West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission has ordered Medica Superspeciality Hospital to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to a patient, who developed complications after a cardiothoracic surgery.
A surgical gauge left behind in the operating site caused the complications, said the complaint lodged with the panel. Soumen Kundu underwent the surgery in 2024. While the surgery was a success, he did not quite recover. During an imaging, a surgical gauge was found in his operating site, the complaint claimed. “When the patient went to Medica to have it removed, he was reportedly told a procedure would be done, but he would have to pay. They would not accept Swasthya Sathi or any other insurance,” said Justice (retd) Ashim Kumar Banerjee, chairman of the health commission.
Kundu later got the gauge removed at SSKM Hospital. “The complainant demanded Rs 1 crore, which we did not approve. We have asked Medica to pay Rs 5 lakh rupees,” said Banerjee. Medica officials said they were waiting for a copy of the judgment.
The commission also fined IHR, a fertility centre, Rs 5 lakh after a couple complained the DNA of their child, born with the help of IVF, did not match theirs.
