‘Relations are not limited by just one issue’, Indian Ambassador said after meeting the Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh, consular service closed

Bangladesh-India Relations: Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Verma on Tuesday (December 03, 2024) said that India and Bangladesh have “extensive and multidimensional relations” and it “cannot be limited to just one issue”.

“We have extensive and multidimensional relations,” he said, The Daily Star reported. He said India wants to build “dependence” between the two countries for mutual benefit. Verma made this comment after meeting Bangladesh’s acting Foreign Secretary Riyaz Hamidullah in Dhaka. Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry had summoned him a day after an unruly mob broke the security blockade and entered the neighboring country’s Assistant High Commission in Agartala.

On Tuesday, the government’s legal advisor said the Agartala incident was a “failure” of the Indian government. Legal advisor Asif Nazrul wrote in a Facebook post, “India should understand that this is not Sheikh Hasina’s Bangladesh.” A day earlier, thousands of people had demonstrated near the Bangladesh mission in Agartala, protesting the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das as well as attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

Tension increased between India and Bangladesh

Advisor on Foreign Affairs Tauheed Hussain, in his brief remarks to the media on the visit of the Indian envoy, told that “he (Verma) has been asked to come.” Government news agency Bangladesh Samvad Sanstha (BSS) said the Indian envoy entered the Foreign Ministry at 4 pm. BSS said that acting Foreign Secretary Riyaz Hamidullah summoned the Indian High Commissioner. Tension between the two neighbors has increased since the visit of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India on August 5. After this, the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das last week increased this tension even further.

Chinmoy Das’s bail petition will be heard next month

A Bangladesh court on Tuesday adjourned till next month the hearing on the bail plea of Chinmoy Krishna Das, arrested on treason charges, as no lawyer appeared on his behalf. Swatantra Gaurang Das, Sadhu’s associate in the Samajwadi Sanatani Jagran Jyot, claimed that no lawyer represented the Hindu leader due to threats from a “politically motivated group of lawyers”.
