The CBI took over the investigation from Kolkata Police on August 13 and recorded statements from over 120 witnesses. During the 66-day in-camera trial, the prosecution relied heavily on biological evidenceincluding DNA samples, viscera, toxicology reports, and a layered voice analysis (LVA), to establish Roy’s involvement in the crime.
According to the CBI, saliva and DNA samples collected from the victim’s body matched Roy’s. The victim was reported to have put up a fierce struggle, as five blunt force injuries were found on Roy’s body. Additionally, a clump of hair at the crime scene was linked to Roy. His missing Bluetooth device, visible in CCTV footage of his exit but absent from his person, was later found at the crime scene and paired with his mobile phone.
The CBI described the crime as “rarest of the rare” and cited a multi-institutional medical board report, which concluded that the victim died due to manual strangulation and smothering.
The investigation revealed the victim’s spectacles were broken during the assault, and she was found bleeding from her eyes, mouth and private parts. Injury marks were also observed on her neck and lips.
Roy, who was arrested the day after the incident, pleaded not guilty, claiming he had been framed. His defense counsel, Sourav Bandyopadhyay, challenged the prosecution’s narrative, arguing that the seminar hall where the victim’s body was discovered was located near the TB ward’s nursing station, which is manned 24/7.
He contended that it would have been nearly impossible for someone to commit such a crime without being noticed within the 28 minutes in question.
Despite the defense’s claims, the court accepted the CBI’s evidence and delivered its verdict on this shocking case.
