Russia-Belarus Mutual Security Treaty: Russia and Belarus are already military and political partners. Amidst increasing tensions with the West, both the countries are ready to finalize a mutual security treaty. This treaty will further strengthen the existing security and strategic cooperation between the two countries. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, while giving information about this treaty on Friday (6 December), called it a mutual initiative.
In fact, this announcement coincided with a summit in Minsk between Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The threat to Ukraine is likely to increase after this treaty. After this treaty, it will become easier for Belarus to enter Russia’s war with Ukraine. At the same time, even if Ukraine gets a place in NATO, the military organization of Western countries, this organization will have to face difficulties in tightening the noose on Russia. The 3 main things about this agreement are as follows.
1. Mutual Security Commitments
The treaty will formalize mutual security guarantees, ensuring that both countries are committed to protecting each other’s interests, RIA news agency reports. “This is a completely reciprocal initiative,”
2. Integration of nuclear defense
The agreement follows Putin’s recent decision to lower the nuclear strike threshold and extend Russia’s nuclear umbrella to Belarus. Nuclear weapons were withdrawn from Belarus after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. However, Moscow deployed tactical nuclear weapons in the country last year to defend against Western aggression. Whereas this weapon is still under the control of Russia.
3. Coordinate Military Operations
This treaty further strengthens the already strong military partnership. Moscow and Minsk regularly conduct exercises together. At the same time, Russia-led Post-Soviet military groups are planning exercises in Belarus next September. This agreement signals further alignment of their military strategies in response to regional and global challenges. This treaty reflects the deepening alliance between the two countries.
