NEW DELHI: In a new setback ahead of the Champions Trophy, Shakib Al Hasan was banned from rolling his arm over in both local and international cricket after failing a second test of his bowling action.
Shakib had previously failed an independent evaluation of his bowling motion at Loughborough University, a UK testing facility approved by the ICC. His ability to bowl his left-arm spin in any format had already been hindered by the outcome, which was announced on December 15, 2024.

The all-rounder’s status remained unchanged following his reevaluation at Chennai’s Sri Ramachandra Center for Sports Science last month.
“Consequently, the player’s existing suspension from bowling in international cricket following the initial independent assessment at the testing center of Loughborough University in the UK, also remains in place,” the bcb said in a statement on Saturday.
“A successful reassessment is required for the bowling suspension to be lifted.”
On February 20, Bangladesh will play India in Dubai in the Champions Trophy. All countries involved must announce their lineups by January 12.
Shakib is still in the running for a berth in Bangladesh’s Champions Trophy team, and both captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and BCB president Faruque Ahmed have endorsed his inclusion.
“While Shakib is currently unable to bowl, he is eligible to continue playing as a batsman in all forms of domestic and international cricket,” the BCB said.
The 37-year-old, who is no longer playing Test or T20I cricket, was criticized for a questionable bowling action during a September County Championship game for Surrey. The report was made by on-field umpires David Millns and Steve O’Shaughnessy.
Gazi Ashraf Hossain, the chief selector for the BCB, described the entire incident as “shocking.” Bangladesh lost 0-2 to India in a two-match Test series last year, Shakib’s last appearance for the country.
Due to political turmoil in Dhaka, the legendary all-rounder, who has amassed 4609 runs and 246 wickets in 71 Test matches, 7570 runs and 317 wickets in 247 One-Day Internationals, and 2551 runs and 149 wickets in 129 Twenty20 Internationals, has not returned to Bangladesh since opting not to play his final Test match against South Africa in Mirpur.
He and his family currently reside in the United States.
