Kolkata: Two youths on a bike, speeding along Maa Flyoverwere killed after their vehicle rammed into the guard wall at a sharp bend on the flyover above Science City and fell 60 feet onto the road below on Sunday morning. However, their bike remained on the flyover.
Dilshan Alam (22) and his friend riding pillion, Anis Rana (18), were rushed to the SSKM Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival by an attending doctor. While Alam wore a helmet, Rana’s head was without any protection.
Police said Alam left his Bowbazar home, telling his parents that he was going for a morning walk. Instead, he took his brother’s motorbike and left for a quick ride with his friend. Cops suspect he was speeding when the accident happened around 6:40 am. Following the accident, multiple senior officers of Kolkata Police, including top cop Manoj Verma, visited the spot.
Cops said they would propose the installation of 6-ft tall steel safety nets at the curve of the flyover to prevent further accidents.
Similar crash barriers are installed at two points on the Maa Flyover – on Circus Avenue crossing and at Park Circus 7 Point crossing. Other flyovers like the ones at Garden Reach and on Lake Town-EM Bypass stretch also have similar safety nets.
“There are many technical issues involved in this matter. If a vehicle approaches a turn at high speed, such accidents occur. We will discuss with our team and the transport department to find a solution to prevent this. By analyzing the video footage, we Understand that such accidents can be prevented,” Varma told reporters during the visit.
Police said the duo took the flyover from the Metropolitan-end and were riding towards Park Circus.
According to the families, both young men did odd jobs in the area and occasionally went for morning walks. The family was informed of the accident by the police around 7 am. Anis’s uncle, Shankar Rana, expressed disbelief, saying both were skilled riders.
This accident has raised questions about the frequent reckless biking on the Maa Flyover despite surveillance. The fatal accident unit at Lalbazar has begun an investigation, and the damaged bike has been seized. CCTV footage from the scene has been collected.
An official mentioned that measures for speed control and surveillance were in place, and the reasons for the accident will be thoroughly examined.
