Kolkata: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has planned to set up a five-storey market complex-cum-community hall on a 20-cottah plot in New Town BG block in Action Area I to rehabilitate the hawkers and street vendorswho are selling their wares on the roadside near DLF.
“As per the recent survey conducted before Puja last year, there are around 200 hawkers and vendors who are currently doing business adjacent to the DLF building,” said an NKDA official.
The authorities have initiated the process to engage an agency to build the market building at an estimated cost Rs 4.5 crore. The project needs to be completed within six months from the date of commencement. Presently, there are two NKDA-run community markets in New Town Action Area I. “It will be the third community market for Action Area I,” said an official. Presently, there are around 14 hawker markets and 12 NKDA-run community markets across New Town. NKDA will start issuing identity cards to 1,246 identified hawkers, who are eligible for rehabilitation but their names don’t feature on the rehabilitation list. A survey conducted before Puja revealed that there are a total of 3,133 hawkers in New Town. Out of them, the authorities are in the process of rehabilitating 1,887 hackers. “Already around 1,200 hawkers and vendors have been rehabilitated in 10 stalls and markets,” said an official. “Before clearing new encroachments, identity cards will be issued to the hawkers and street vendors who are eligible for relocation but are not presently on the list to be rehabilitated,” said an NKDA official.
