Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police claimed that city bikers and motorists were more disciplined on the roads this Christmas than last year, According to the police data, a total of 11,452 violations were reported between Dec 24 and Dec 25 morning. Another 12,990 violations were reported between Dec 23 and 24.
There were 62 and 59 cases of drink-driving during the same periods respectively, taking the total number of drink-driving cases in the past 48 hours to121. Incidentally, a total of 319 cases of drink-driving were reported from Dec 20.
Last year, Kolkata Traffic Police had prosecuted 15,257 motorists and riders – 636 persons per hour – for breaking traffic rules between Dec 23 and midnight of Dec 24. Another 14,638 were prosecuted between Dec 24 and 25 last year. There were 120 cases of drink-driving on the night of Dec 23 and the early hours of Dec 24.
From midnight of Dec 24 to Dec 25 morning, there were 89 prosecutions, making it a total of 209 cases of drink-driving in 48 hours.
This year, police carried out more than 65,512 traffic prosecutions in the past five days, which is around 7 percent less than last year’s 70,101 prosecutions during the same period.
In the past 48 hours, focus has been put on preventing illegal parking and ensure better crowd and pedestrian management on the stretch lying between Alipore Zoo (Belvedere Road, Alipore Road, DL Khan Road) and Bow Barracks (CR Avenue, Bentinck Street) and covering Park Street and Maidan, Lalbazar officials said.
“We ensured that we had zero tolerance for illegal parking on 15 major roads and bylanes in the city,” claimed a top cop at Lalbazar.
DC (Traffic) Yeilwad Shrikant Jagannathrao said cops faced the challenge of tackling the increasing habit of not wearing helmets among two-wheeler riders. “We carried out 1,000 prosecutions on Dec 24. Between Dec 20 and 24, we carried out 5,023 prosecutions for not wearing helmets,” he said.
It has also been decided to carry out naka checking at different points each day to keep riders and motorists guessing all the time until the New Year.
“Besides the two regular nakas, each traffic guard is keeping one or two flying squads that are changing spots and nabbing the drunk drivers,” explained an officer at Lalbazar.
